The Late Freddie Price is a singer-songwriter embarking on a solo career, inspired to make cosmic Americana. Having majored in English Literature and specialised in poetry writing, he incorporates evocative lyrics rich with imagery into his fresh-sounding, vintage-influenced brand of folk music.
"I Can Only Dream..."
The Late Freddie Price’s new single “I Can Only Dream” evokes the feeling of beginning to accept the end of a relationship whilst still longing for it nostalgically. The acoustic guitar-led country track is built up by double-tracked vocals and woozy tremolo guitars before a mournful, melodic guitar solo that calls to mind Neil Young takes centre stage. The vocals are underpinned by a simple chord progression, allowing the emotive lyric to shine.
The Late Freddie Price says:
"I Can Only Dream" is a song about how love songs don't sound the same when you're not in love anymore.
I was sitting in my friend's living room watching the Stephen Merchant series "Outlaws" when a song came on the soundtrack that I liked the sound of. I googled it and found out it was "I Could Have Gone Right" by Merle Haggard. I started trying to write a song that sounded like it.
At the time I had only recently accepted the end of a two-year relationship. Love songs did not sound the same any more and I was in an occasionally hopeless, quite lonely place. I was often dreaming of the past, but I had some acceptance that it was over.
The song was recorded at Reform Radio in Manchester, England. I was part of a group who were allowed to create a song in Reform's studio. The group compiled a radio show of all our songs and recorded interviews live. The show was called "Too Much Flava" and aired in February 2023."
lyrics
As we depart, so does a piece of my heart.
I listen, and listen and listen. It sounds like something is missing.
And love songs only make me sad. I can only dream of what we had.
Guitar is playing. Melody sounds like it's saying,
"I miss you, I love you forever, but we can never be together."
And love songs only make me sad. I can only dream of what we had.
